Our Story

Prior to the early 1980’s, there was a void in the building industry for expanded selection and availability when it came to trimming out the interior of new homes. There were very few options when it came to the size or design of mouldings and doors that were readily available. The local lumber yard was the primary source for these products and their role was to attempt to provide everything, but they did not specialize in any one particular area or product line. Customers had a narrow range of offerings available without items being “custom made or custom ordered.” A group of entrepreneurs saw this as a niche in the market and pursued expanding the offerings and availability without lengthy lead times and at affordable pricing. They coupled this with extended services not before available, such as on-site design and consultation with the decision makers as well as free measuring and estimates, free delivery and other personal services. With this brand-new concept Wholesale Hardwood Interiors (WHI) was birthed.

We knew in addition to the highest quality product, the key to a long-term relationship with valued customers would be exemplary service. In 1985, the very same year WHI was founded, warehouses, showrooms and regional territories were established within the four-state region of Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, and Indiana. While WHI began in the heart of Kentucky, it was the goal from the beginning, to be your local millwork provider.

Wholesale Hardwood Interiors began with six people in a 10,000 square foot building and an office trailer. The company has taken on drastic changes from its humble beginnings. Ground broke on WHI’s current location two years later in 1987 with a 35,000 square foot facility. At the time this facility was thought to be more than enough room than the company would need, nor would ever outgrow. In 1996, WHI was bursting at the seams and a 25,000 square foot facility was added to accommodate manufacturing and give more room for product inventory. In 2000, another 20,000 square foot facility was added specifically to accommodate door hanging and door inventory. Less than five years later, additions had to be made to accommodate shipping and receiving bays, inventory storage, a maintenance facility, and a new wood waste operation.

“Our customers have high expectations for us as a custom home builder and WHI helps us meet these expectations in quality, service, and product knowledge.”
